Learning at STC

Middle School: Years 7 - 9

Middle School: Years 7 - 9

Our Years 7 to 9 students follow the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), offering a challenging and practical learning framework that supports students' transition and integration into the secondary school community, building a solid foundation of critical thinking and global mindedness for the middle and senior years.

Sha Tin College welcomes students of all abilities and interests by providing a stimulating and purposeful environment in which all individuals are challenged to realise their potential. We look to develop our students intellectually, emotionally, physically and socially so when they leave us, they are ready to be active members of our global society.

We aim to prepare our students for future roles by fostering a spirit of inquiry, a sense of adventure and a self-confidence that will lead to the development of tolerance, independence and open-mindedness.

Learning at STC encourages students to become creative and critical thinkers, principled in their individual and collaborative goals, and importantly, caring young people who want to make a positive impact on the lives of others. We achieve these aims by providing a stimulating environment where caring and capable staff continue their own lifelong learning, providing positive role models for our students. Our ongoing development of academic resources and active engagement with the latest pedagogies ensure that we are upholding rigorous standards of learning and inquiry. Opportunities for broad and deep learning are offered both in the classroom and beyond by the provision of a stimulating extra-curricular programme of activities and events, often led by our senior students. We welcome you to these exciting programmes of study, and look forward to supporting our students in their learning journeys with us.

The IB MYP is an academically rigorous programme, aiming to challenge students, and encourage them to make connections between their learning in different subject areas, and to real-world scenarios. The curriculum is concept-based, which allows students to transfer information from one context to another, and enables a deeper understanding. It is also skills-based, which empowers students by ensuring they are ready to face an ever-changing world. As an international school, Sha Tin College aims to nurture globally engaged students, with a strong sense of intercultural understanding.

We are proud to offer a diverse and broad curriculum that includes a wide variety of subjects, allowing students to work with specialist teachers to discover new passions, to develop important skills and nurture personal growth.

Meaningful participation in service is required for all Middle School students, as we aim to develop empathy and kindness. The culmination of the Middle Years Programme is the Community Project which occurs in Year 9. Students work in small groups to take action against an issue they identify within their local community.

The Middle Years Programme is part of the IB Learning Continuum, therefore students coming from schools delivering the Primary Years Programme (all ESF Primaries) will be familiar with the terminology and style of learning. The IB MYP will be a thorough grounding for students as they progress into the Senior School and continue their studies with their I/GCSE courses in Years 10 and 11, followed by the IB Diploma Programme or IB Careers Programme in Years 12 and 13.
