Learning Technologies

Our Vision

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) prepares students to participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and social activities are increasingly transformed by access to varied and developing technologies.  Well developed ICT skills give students independence and control of their learning, allowing them to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information responsibly, creatively and with discrimination.

Our vision is to facilitate a deeper and more differentiated learning process by enabling students to connect with a wide range of information, people, communities and culture.  The effective use of ICT is a key 21st Century life skill that ensures our students are enthusiastic, active and independent learners. As a school we recognise that ICT augments excellent learning practices. The effective use of the wide range of facilities offered by learning technologies opens up unprecedented opportunities for invigorating learning and teaching across the whole curriculum.

Citizenship in a Digital World

The school works closely with parents to help our students grow into responsible digital citizens.  We follow guidelines laid down by Generation Safe and utilise resources from organisations such as Common Sense Media to inform our curriculum approaches and policies, which are embedded across all year levels.

Our Platforms

Sha Tin College operates a Google Apps for Education domain.  Allied with Smart, our Moodle-based virtual learning environment, this gives staff and students and powerful suite of tools to enrich learning and teaching.  Additionally, we continue to invest heavily in our IT infrastructure to ensure a cutting-edge backbone is in place to support our ever growing use of digital technologies.

1:1 Laptop Programme

Sha Tin College is a 1:1 laptop school.  In Years 7-9 we operate a parent-owned, single model laptop programme, which is fully school-supported.  Each year the school tenders for the most appropriate device for the incoming cohort.  In Years 10-13 students bring their own device, which must meet the school’s minimum specifications.

For full details of our programme, rationale, information on current laptops in use at STC, policies, guidelines and parental support, please visit our 1:1 website here.

How long is my school account valid for?

Students leaving the school will lose access to the following accounts on their last day:
User accounts and school reports
● Google Drive
● Gateway
● SMART

Students should therefore make arrangements for transferring any files that they want to retain to other accounts before their last day. It is strongly recommended that this is done well in advance of their last day so that the school’s IT Services team has time to help resolve any difficulties.

Files that parents and students may want to transfer:
● School reports available (in PDF format) via Gateway and SMART
● Schoolwork that the student wants to retain for future reference

Files can be downloaded from Google Drive using Google T akeout. Instructions are available here. Please be aware that the school’s IT Services team will not reactivate accounts after the student has left the school. N.B. Students will be unable to obtain PDFs of school reports if they do not download them on or before their leaving date.

Software Licences

Any Adobe licences purchased through the school will expire at the end of the academic year. Please link your phone number to your Adobe account before you leave the school so that you can recover your password via your phone, as the school IT Services team will be unable to help.

One-to-one Laptop

As the system for one-to-one laptop is configured for school, if you would like to reset it for future use, please back up your important data and bring it to the IT Services Office before you leave. The process may take up to one working day.
