Learning Diversity

Learning Diversity

The Learning Diversity Faculty is a multidisciplinary team dedicated to supporting students to engage with their learning and achieve their individual goals. Our aim is to foster resilience, empathy, and the strengths that enable every student to reach their potential.

We create a safe, secure, and stimulating environment drawing on expertise across Learning Support (LS), English for Academic Purposes (EAP), and our Elevate programme. We provide targeted support at the individual, group, and whole-school levels.

Our student-centred, holistic approach guides consultation, assessment, and intervention with a team-around-the-child approach. We prioritise clear collaboration and communication with teaching staff to promote learning and wellbeing. We also work closely with parents and external agencies, building relationships founded on equity, trust, and mutual respect.

Student support and wellbeing underpins all of our work.  All teachers share responsibility for meeting diverse learning needs and are regarded as teachers of Learning Diversity.

Learning Support

The Learning Support team provides a graduated Response to Intervention (RTI) model. According to the level of need, we deliver a range of targeted supports, from in-class support to small group or individual withdrawal interventions.

We work collaboratively with students, parents, teaching staff, and external agencies to develop and implement effective support strategies. This partnership approach ensures that student needs are understood and met, enabling them to progress confidently and successfully.

Our core areas of focus include:

  • Tier 1: teachers use scaffolding and differentiation to support access to curriculum content.
  • Tiers 2 and 3: targeted small-group instruction in literacy and numeracy, social thinking, executive functioning.
  • IGCSE and IB: focused academic support interventions in subject-specific areas.
  • Examination Access Arrangements: where appropriate, students may be assessed for these arrangements.
  • Alternative curriculum pathways: ensure equitable access to education.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

The Elevate Programme is a whole‑school approach designed to extend and inspire high‑achieving students while supporting families in understanding and nurturing their child’s unique strengths. The Programme builds on the strong foundations established in primary school and helps students explore their interests, talents, and suitable enrichment pathways.

Drawing on standardised assessments and psychometric insights into ability, attainment, and self‑concept, we develop a comprehensive understanding of each learner. In collaboration with students and their families, the Learning Diversity Faculty then develops an Individualised Elevate Profile that clearly outlines strengths, growth areas, and tailored strategies to support ongoing challenge and enrichment.

Elevate Profiles signpost a broad range of enrichment opportunities across three strands:

  • Stand 1 Classroom & curriculum Enrichment: pedagogical approaches and in-class stretch-and-challenge strategies to extend learning.
  • Strand 2  College-Based Enrichment: additional programmes and activities that develop skills, knowledge and experience beyond the regular curriculum.

Strand 3 Partnership Enrichment: opportunities through partnerships and memberships within ESF, Hong Kong and international organisations.
