IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) Overview
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) is an academically rigorous programme that challenges students to connect their learning across their subjects and real-world issues.
MYP learning experiences prioritise inquiry, action, and reflection, encouraging students to construct meaning collaboratively. Units of inquiry are designed to explore different contexts, fostering connections that deepen understanding across subjects. The IB MYP Concepts and Global Contexts guide these explorations, ensuring that our units are relevant to personal, local, and global issues.
Service learning is integral to the MYP, promoting empathy, kindness and curiosity among Middle School students. The culmination of this experience is the Year 9 Community Project, where students collaborate in small groups to address local issues they identify and are interested in. This project not only enhances leadership skills but also reinforces their commitment to community engagement.
The MYP is part of the IB Learning Continuum, therefore students coming from schools delivering the Primary Years Programme (all ESF Primaries) will be familiar with the terminology and style of learning. It provides thorough grounding for learners as they progress into the Senior School and continue their studies with their (I)GCSE courses in Years 10 and 11, followed by the IB Diploma Programme or IB Careers Programme in Years 12 and 13.
